Papadums
I am on a Satvic diet until the Thaipusam end but when talking about foods especially Indian cuisine you can't avoid "Papadum".My previous post I did write about some food stuff, "Morning breakfast and "Food for Onam festival" to name a few but today I just want to write something about food but, alas! why not Papadum?
Papadum are an important part of South Asian cuisine, recipes vary from region to region and family to family. They are typically made from flour or paste derived from either lentil, chickpea, black gram (urid flour), rice, or potato.I did buy a few verities of Papadums when I went to India.I can only tell you one thing. They are really delicious and "you can eat it on its own" like what one of the famous bread advertisement use to say.
Papadum is actually very famous in Malaysia too since Malaysia is a multy racial country with Indian communities here the glamour of Papadum had rocketed sky high until you can even find its been serve as a tit bit in some PUB's in this countries and not to mention they name the movie after it and become hits here.
You go to any Banana Leaf restaurant in Malaysia , Papadum will be the main side dishes and I saw even other races like to have them.It one of the famous Indian food apart from Parotha,Tosei and Chapati.
Papadum is often associated with the empowerment of women in India. Many individual and organised businesses run by women produce Papadum, pickles, and other snacks. This provides them regular income from minimal financial investments. Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad is an organisation owned and run solely by women that produces large quantities of Papadums on the open market which started as a small business in the late 1950s,and now has an annual income of over Rs.3.15 billion, or just under $80 million US dollars.
Papadum is something easy to cook and what you need is just to throw them into a boiling oil and in a few second walla!! Papadum served.I use to see my buddy's during our pre-Thaipusam preperation meal where they as usual will be assign to cooked the Papadums and this tradition are still been continue till to date from their bachelorhood's until married."A traditional indeed".We use to joke that the whole meal is delicious because of Papadum that they fried.
That goes my little story about Papadum.Try one and you will not be disappointed.
